Artist Bio
DAI Shengjie currently lives and works in Shanghai, China. Dai holds a Master’s Degree from New York University and pursued her undergraduate studies at Smith College and Columbia University, with a diverse educational background spanning visual arts, theatrical design, film theories, economics, and more. Recently, her work has focused on extending narratives through materials, combining her experiences of migration and emotional memories. She is particularly interested in used objects from the global industrialization process, non-metabolizable elements, and the “afterlife of media” closely related to the lives of labor communities. Her work aims to explore the fate of objects after her human-defined utility has expired, investigating the environmental burdens and new values they may generate. Her creations resonate with everyday landscapes, tracing the transformations and flows within the material world. Recently, she was shortlisted for the "UCCA Young Associates’ Choice Awards."
